Louise Zhang

My approach to counseling is grounded in a relational and person-centered philosophy. My experiences at the Shanghai Mental Health Center, working with clients dealing with depression, anxiety, shame, and trauma, shaped my therapeutic style. I incorporate existential-humanistic, feminist, psychodynamic, and multicultural therapies into my practice, adapting to my clients' unique needs. My commitment to anti-racism and inclusivity for all gender expressions and sexual orientations is deep-seated. I strive to bring open, honest dialogue, aiming to offer care, support, and empowerment to the underrepresented, especially within the Asian and LGBTQIA+ communities, and women.
I see therapy as an opportunity to foster a new interpersonal relationship, providing a safe space for clients to explore their existing interpersonal patterns and seek change. I believe in the power of therapy to help individuals recognize their worth and embrace their identity. A strong proponent of existential-humanistic therapy, I value the equality and justice within the therapeutic relationship. I respect and appreciate my clients' subjective views and personal experiences, believing that they are their own best experts. In our sessions, my role is to create a supportive environment for you to discover and replace internalized messages with empowering, self-affirming ones. I believe in authenticity as an essential aspect of therapy and strive to bring this quality into our work together. Mistakes may happen, but they are opportunities for growth and understanding.
Currently, I am pursuing a Master's degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness with an Advanced Certificate in LGBT Health, Education, and Social Services from New York University. I also hold two Bachelor's degrees in Applied Psychology from Shanghai Normal University and East China Normal University. I offer therapy in both Mandarin and English, extending a warm welcome to those who may benefit from a bilingual therapist.
Join me in creating a space for unapologetic, authentic self-expression, and let's embark on this transformative journey together!
