Internship description: Herald Square Psychology has an established standing as a private practice in midtown Manhattan, serving people and enhancing their mental health wellbeing. Through the internship program with us, interns will be immersed in an environment where clinicians provide person-centered and evidence-based psychotherapy. Acknowledging internship as an essential part of the process to training and becoming a clinician, we offer clinical knowledge and supervision as well as a supportive setting to put these learnings into practice. For therapy to be an experiential process, as it is true for clients to experience therapy before knowing what it is, the same applies to interns and clinicians in training. It is our hope to provide a positive and helpful experience throughout your journey so that you can grow as a clinician.
Services that we provide include individual therapy and couples therapy with the adult population, interns can expect to experience multifaceted considerations, including ethical issues, communication skills and interpersonal skills aside from counseling skills. The process of internship will provide a realistic lens for working in the field of mental health and being in a private practice setting, and you will be encouraged to adjust and adapt throughout the process. You will also be encouraged to reflect and examine your own values, beliefs and emotions to grow the capacity of understanding clients' processes. Interns will be expected to complete the following responsibilities and grow in these domains:
- Establish and maintain an assigned caseload.
- Focus on clinical formulation, case conceptualization, goal setting and treatment planning.
- Apply appropriate theory, methodology, and counseling skills.
- Attend weekly individual and group supervision on time
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors and colleagues.
- Demonstrate willingness to meet your professional obligations with commitment.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn and respond in a professional manner to constructive feedback.
- Demonstrate the personal traits conducive to effective counseling, learning and professional development.
- Maintain ethical standards and cultural competency.

Mental Health Counselor is needed to perform the following duties:

■ Ensure accurate and complete evaluation of referred clients:

Master's Degree is required in Counseling, Mental Health Counseling or Social Work or Psychology
Mental Health Counselor is needed to perform the following duties:
■ Effective maintenance of involvement in the development and review of clients’ treatment plans.
- Develop individual treatment plan for each client in conjunction with his/her mental needs, treatment expectations, and individual backgrounds.
- Assesses for biological, psychological and social factors that can be contributing to clients' physical or mental condition.
- Assess patients for risk of suicide attempts.
- Complete initial releases, demographic information and other chart materials by the end of the intake sessions.
- Conducts diagnostic assessments and give preliminary diagnosis for new intakes as well as complete the necessary paperwork to open a chart.
■ Deliver quality and consistent individual/ group treatment. Promote continuity of program activity through the maintenance of proper channels of communication.
- Conduct weekly 45-min counseling sessions with clients. Through these, therapist will assess need, build trust and explore issues.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment on clients' progress in resolving presenting issues and moving towards treatment goals.
- Encourage the client to explore their feelings and behaviors and to develop insight into themselves or their relationships.
- Collaborate with other staff members to perform clinical assessments or develop treatment plans.
- Types of session (individual/family session) provided will be determined by the clinical needs of the client.
- Modify treatment activities or approaches as needed to comply with changes in clients' status
■ Maintain all required client-related documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of records relating to clients' treatment.
- Fill out and maintain client-related paperwork, including federal- and state-mandated forms, client diagnostic records, and progress notes.
- Regular review and update of treatment plans that are consistent with treatment goals.
- Make charts available on request for internal or external audit.
■ Ensure accurate and complete evaluation of referred clients:
- Coordinate care of clients with medical staff and referral sources.
- Provide and gain consultation as needed for clients with other members of the treatment team.
- Refer clients to other levels of care or for other services as necessary.
- Gather information about mental health referral resources that could be used in conjunction with therapy.
■ Ensure continued professional development and self-improvement. Perform projects as assigned by supervisor:
- Participates in relevant clinical meetings and ongoing development of professional knowledge and skills through individual and group supervision.
- Informs supervisor of significant risk/issues related to clients as appropriate, and follows emergency reporting process as required.
- Learn about new developments in counseling by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, or establishing and maintaining contact with other mental health agencies.
■ Ensure compliance to all internal and external regulations, policies and procedures:
- Complete discharge/transfer summary documentation on a timely basis.
- Evaluate treatment outcomes and write reports. Discuss with individual patients their plans after leaving therapy.
- Network within the health professional community to maintain continuity of work and client base.
